Pakistan PM Vows to Keep Pushing US-Iran De-Escalation
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly session in New York, Sharif described Islamabad's role as central to the diplomatic effort. "Pakistan is playing the role of a sincere and honest mediator between Iran, our neighborly country, and the United States," he said.
Sharif pointed back to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, a document he signed alongside Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and US President Donald Trump. Progress since then, he acknowledged, has stalled. "unfortunately, events after that got a bit unpredictable," he said.
Still, the prime minister insisted Pakistan's resolve hasn't wavered. "But Pakistan is completely focused. We have not lost hope; we [are] absolutely determined that we will further make efforts and make progress to de-escalate the situation," he told reporters.
The mediation push dates back to the outbreak of fighting after the US and Israel launched a war against Iran on Feb. 28. Pakistan brokered a ceasefire by April 8 and went on to host over 20 hours of direct negotiations between American and Iranian officials in Islamabad.
Weeks of shuttle diplomacy, with Qatar also involved, produced the Islamabad MoU on June 18 — a framework giving both sides 60 days to hammer out a lasting settlement. That truce proved fragile: retaliatory strikes soon resumed, and tensions have persisted since.
Indirect talks between Iranian and American negotiators resumed Tuesday on the margins of the UN General Assembly in New York.
Pressed on whether additional rounds of talks were likely, Sharif called the diplomatic effort a "continuous process," adding that "all friendly countries are contributing to achieve peace."
