Iran Moves to Formalize Control of Strait of Hormuz

(MENAFN) Iran's legislature is preparing to vote on landmark legislation that would formally institutionalize the country's authority over the Strait of Hormuz, a senior parliamentary official announced Saturday, in a move with sweeping implications for global energy markets.

Alaeddin Salimi, a member of parliament's presiding board, confirmed that lawmakers had reached a "definitive decision" to codify control over the critical waterway, signaling a significant escalation in Tehran's assertiveness over one of the world's most vital shipping corridors.

"The parliament's decision to legislate the management of the Strait of Hormuz is final, and this plan will become law," Salimi told an Iranian semi-official news agency.

The lawmaker issued a pointed warning to foreign governments seeking to influence Iranian policy over the strait.

"Those who say the Strait of Hormuz must remain open should know that this issue concerns us. We will not allow others to decide for us," he said.

Salimi added that all provisions of the proposed bill would undergo full parliamentary review before being enacted, with a public legislative session and formal vote expected shortly.

Straddling the coastlines of Iran and Oman, the Strait of Hormuz functions as the world's most critical energy chokepoint, channeling a substantial portion of international oil and gas exports.

The legislative push comes against a backdrop of sharply deteriorating regional security. Tensions ignited after the US and Israel launched military strikes against Iran in February, prompting Tehran to retaliate with attacks on Israel and US allies across the Gulf — and to temporarily close the strait. A ceasefire brokered through Pakistani mediation took hold on April 8, later extended indefinitely by US President Donald Trump.

However, diplomacy faltered when Islamabad-mediated negotiations collapsed, leading Washington to impose a naval blockade on Iranian ports on April 13 — including those along the Strait of Hormuz itself.

International mediation efforts to resolve the broader conflict remain active.
