Strait of Hormuz Mine Clearance May Take Six Months—Pentagon
As stated by reports, members of Congress were informed that Iran may have deployed more than 20 mines in and around the strategic waterway, with some allegedly placed using remote GPS-guided methods, which would make detection and removal more complex.
The assessment reportedly drew concern from lawmakers across party lines, as it suggests that economic impacts linked to the situation—including rising fuel and oil prices—could persist for an extended period.
The issue of mine deployment in the strait has been a subject of dispute. According to reports, the US president previously suggested that Iran had removed or was in the process of removing such devices, and claimed that most personnel involved in laying mines had been eliminated during military strikes.
Iran has rejected these claims, denying that it placed mines in the waterway and describing the accusations as misleading. At the same time, Iranian media have reported that maritime safety guidance maps were issued by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in the area.
Earlier reports indicated concerns about mine-laying activity emerging in the region in March, with US officials later suggesting that smaller vessels may have been used following the destruction of larger ships.
Officials from the Pentagon, US Central Command, and the White House either declined to comment or redirected inquiries to other departments, according to reports.
