CENTCOM Warns Iran’s IRGC Against Unsafe Actions in Strait of Hormuz

(MENAFN) US Central Command (CENTCOM) on Friday warned that it “will not tolerate unsafe” actions by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as Tehran announced plans for live-fire naval exercises next week in the Strait of Hormuz.

CENTCOM urged the IRGC to “conduct the announced naval exercise in a manner that is safe, professional and avoids unnecessary risk to freedom of navigation for international maritime traffic.”

The command emphasized that it will ensure the safety of U.S. personnel, ships, and aircraft operating in the Middle East, warning that unsafe IRGC behavior—including overflights of U.S. vessels, low-altitude or armed overflights when intentions are unclear, high-speed approaches on collision courses, or weapons aimed at U.S. forces—“will not be tolerated.”

While recognizing “Iran's right to operate professionally in international airspace and waters,” CENTCOM stressed that the Strait of Hormuz is “an international sea passage and an essential trade corridor that supports regional economic prosperity.” The command cautioned that “any unsafe and unprofessional behavior near U.S. forces, regional partners or commercial vessels increases risks of collision, escalation, and destabilization.”

“The U.S. military has the most highly trained and lethal force in the world and will continue to operate with the highest levels of professionalism and adhere to international norms,” CENTCOM added, urging the IRGC to follow the same standards.

The warning comes amid rising tensions between Tehran and Washington following nationwide protests in Iran. Demonstrations erupted in late December over a steep decline in the local currency and worsening economic conditions, spreading across several cities and lasting nearly two weeks.
